Manufacturing

Manufacturing has taken a back seat in many parts of the country, but not in the Northland. Businesses across the region make and deliver large items, and do it with great efficiency. The Northland has six taconite mines, which cultivate a network of supply chain businesses.

Four paper mills that dot the map, with locations in Cloquet, Duluth, Grand Rapids, and International Falls. Three other secondary wood products facilities use the Northland's vast wood basket.

The Northland has the leading provider of products and services to the electric utility, telecommunications, tree care, lights and signs, and contractor markets. Innovative manufacturers build hydraulic material-handling cranes. The region hosts two facilities that make shears for scrap processing, demolition, and material handling. The Northland manufactures airplanes, and blends and stores fuel products. Across the entire region, manufacturing remains a path to prosperity.
